Released: 1989
Breeder/Agency: Researchers in the Red River Valley, North Dakota. A clonal selection of Norland Red made by Stan Barrett of Texas in 1989 and subsequently propagated by Gene Shaver of Nebraska.

The standard early season, red-skinned variety
Caveat: Norland strains (Red, Dark Red, New Red, Super Red, Strain 72 a.k.a. Red Norland Strain 72) cannot be distinguished from each other by traditional means. Unequivocal identification will require laboratory analysis.


Production Characteristics
  • Maturity: Early to very early for tablestock. Medium to late for processing
  • Yield: Medium
  • Specific Gravity: Low to very low (1.047 to 1.071)
  • Diseases: Resistant to leafroll, net necrosis, growth cracks, hollow heart, early blight, scab, PVA, PVY, potato wart, rhizoctonia. Susceptible to water damage, greening, enlarged lenticel infections, silver scurf, late blight
  • Storage: Stores well, even though it has a short dormancy. Red color tends to fade in storage
  • Market: Early season fresh market, tablestock, home gardens. Chipping, right out of the field
  • Advantages: Early season fresh market. Large percentage of U.S. No. 1 tubers. Popular as 'baby reds' when graded to B or C sizes
Physical Characteristics
  • Plant
    • Medium sized plants, decumbant with a good canopy
    • Moderately abundant clusters of purple flowers with bright yellow anthers
    • Stems (stalks, vines, haulm) are dark green. Leaves are smaller and more plentiful than for most varieties
  • Tubers
    • Smooth, round to medium oblong, slightly flattened. Shallow eyes
    • Deep red, almost burgundy skin. Thin and delicate, even when suberized. Color may be enhanced when grown in heavier, darker soils such as muck and loam.

    • Typically requires one week longer after vine killing to achieve strong skin set
Culinary Characteristics
  • Taste: Good flavor
  • Texture: Moist, waxy, firm
  • Presentation: Dark red skin color against its bright white flesh is especially appealing.
  • Uses: Very good for boiling and salads. Good for frying, roasting, and French frying.
